Hoyt Stover, a distinguished guest artist and instructor, brings a unique approach to teaching art, with a strong emphasis on observation and life drawing. His classes are meticulously structured to begin with foundational techniques such as thumbnail sketches, gesture drawing, measuring proportions, and blocking in major shadow shapes. Stover believes these elements are crucial to the drawing process and prioritizes their importance in his instruction.
In addition to these core techniques, Stover covers essential topics like 1- and 2-point perspective, edge control, contour drawing, lighting and form, as well as the human figure and portraiture. His teaching philosophy is centered around meeting the diverse needs and expectations of his students. Before classes commence, Stover engages with his students to understand their artistic aspirations, allowing him to tailor activities that align with their individual goals.
For students seeking a traditional learning experience, Stover incorporates still life exercises and places a significant focus on life drawing. Conversely, for those interested in capturing personal subjects, such as family portraits, he introduces the Andrew Loomis method, utilizing photo references to enhance their skills.
