Students may choose to study drawing, oil painting, or both. Lisa's ongoing classes
welcome individuals at any skill level, allowing each student to begin at their own pace and build upon
previous experience through demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and independent work.
Lessons are personalized to suit each student’s progress. You may work alongside classmates on similar
projects or explore different lessons tailored to your goals.
- Beginning artists will learn how to use materials effectively and will be introduced to
the fundamentals of value, color, and composition.
- Intermediate artists will explore diverse techniques while reinforcing and expanding
their existing knowledge.
- Advanced artists will focus on refining their style, pushing creative boundaries, and
deepening the skills they’ve already studied.
This class touches on the fundamentals of drawing and oil painting, including the following:
- the use of oil painting supplies
- canvas preparation
- block-in techniques
- capturing form through light and shadow
- perspective
- figure drawing
- still life
- mixing color
- painting from photos
- chiaroscuro
- grisaille
- glazing
Come join us and see what you can create this fall!
Materials:
Please don't feel you must have everything. This is just a suggested list. Any art supply store should
have what you need.
- Grey canvas pad 9x12 (If you can't find grey, white is fine.)
- Two canvas boards 9x12 (they will be white stretched over some kind of cardboard/chipboard backing)
- Grey pallet paper (or a wooden or glass pallet as you prefer. Paper pallets are a good cheap start.)
- Pallet knife for mixing paints (preferably metal, and mid-length. Not super short.)
- Oil paints of mid-range quality (not off-brand super cheap, but Utrech/Blick/Grumbacher are fine)
- Titanium White
- Ivory Black
- Cadmium Yellow
- Cadmium Red
- Ultramarine Blue
- Other useful colors (not needed for class, but good for your kit) - Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna,
Burnt Umber, Sap Green, Hansa Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Alizarin Crimson
- Any odorless turpentine/paint solvent (Gamsol/Turpenoid/Nood)
- A container for dirty turpentine to clean your brushes (Like the glass, black top, silver coil one
you'll see everywhere)
- A smaller, closeable container for clean turpentine to paint with (a small mason jar will do)
- Any thin oil medium (Linseed Oil/Galkyd/Walnut/Stand Oil), just get the thin, not the thick (you can
tell by turning the bottle - thick won't flow fast)
- A smaller, closeable container for medium to paint with (a small mason jar will do)
- You may want the small, clip-on metal dual-bowl. One holds turpentine, one holds medium (but I
find the covered ones unreliable for transportation)
- Oil paint brushes (you can usually find a kit with several)
- At least three brights, something like 4,6 & 8
- At least one small round (for tiny details)
- At least one chisel (or angle) brush (about size 6)
- Paint brush cleaner (any will do. I use Masters)
- Paper Towels (I use Viva)
Materials:
Please don't feel you must have everything. This is just a
suggested list.
Also, please bring the materials with which you most enjoy drawing.
- Charcoal - vine:medium, stick or pencil:light/medium/hard, white
- Papers - 9x12 charcoal toned (grey/brown/etc.), 9x12 smooth drawing
- Blenders - one pack of mixed sizes
- Erasers - kneaded and solid (any kind that works)
