Plein-Air Landscape Painting
in Acrylics or Oils

McDonald will guide you from start to completion in your Plein-air
landscape using the alla prima (all at once) method
of painting. This class is designed for students who have
already had some basic painting instruction in oils or acrylics. Students will
improve their skills painting from life while producing work
that pleases themselves. Students will have the opportunity
to paint two small paintings during the workshop. The first
will be produced by following the instructor as he demonstrates
on his own painting step-by-step. Students will learn to enjoy
the fast-drying of the acrylics for advanced techniques in
achieving texture and depth.

All other materials can be supplied during the workshop for
the $25 supply fee. All students must be willing to paint
standing or bring their own portable lightweight chairs. Class
size limited to 10 students.
ACRYLIC MATERIALS (if you want to bring your own)
EASEL: a lightweight French or
portable easel that can be held in one hand for transport
PAINTING GROUND: 2 or 3 of one...16" X 20" or 18"
X 24" or 20" X 24" pre-primed canvas, (in tablet,
mounted on board, or stretched on stretchers), depending on
your preference for transporting. If bringing tablet of canvas,
bring masking tape and drawing board.
ACRYLIC COLORS: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red,
Quinacridone Rose, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean
Blue, Viridian Green, and Sap Green.
PALETTE: Large lightweight wooden or plastic palette with
large flat mixing surface.
OTHER SUPPLIES: water spray bottle, water container, acrylic
retarder, rags, paper towels
BASIC BRUSHES: 3 long and stiff-bristled filbert and flat
brushes ranging 1/4" wide to one inch wide for applying
paint and creating texture. 2 soft-bristled flat and bright
smoothing and blending brushes ranging between 1/2" to
1/8". 1 well-pointed soft round brush for details.
Vine charcoal may be used for initial drawing
